Pilot Soil Recycling Facility got "Brownie" award

Green Business News – Nov. 4 – Waterfront Toronto's Pilot soil recycling facility won in the Remediation Technologies and Technological Innovation category known with a 2010 Canadian Urban Institute Brownie award.

Port Lands Pilot Soil Recycling facility was established in July 2010 for its soil management strategy and sustainability.  The purpose of the pilot is to decide the viability of reusing impacted soil as a substitute to the traditional dig-and-dump disposal of brownfield soil.

Waterfront Toronto decided to manage about 2,000,000 cubic metres of infected soil over the next 10 to 20 year by treating soil near its source, diverting soil from landfill, and giving a source of treated soil.

In early September the pilot's operators, DEC and Tetra Tech /Stuyvesant, started processing soil. After the completion of testing the operators will make reports for review and assessment.

To oversee and lead the renewal of Toronto's waterfront the Governments of Canada and Ontario and the City of Toronto created Waterfront Toronto.
